Veasey & Sons Fishmongers, who trade at Venn Street Market every Saturday, have recently been awarded Winners of the Best Food/Farm Shop in Sussex 2013 at The Sussex Food & Drinks Award!

Chris Veasey has been successfully fishing for many years between Eastbourne Harbour and Poole Bay in his Gemini G10 Catamaran. A crew run the boat, catching shellfish in pots and line fishing and netting a mixed variety of fish providing a great display of fresh British fish.

All proceeds support Studio Voltaire’s gallery and education outreach programme.

Venn Street Market celebrates its 1st Birthday as a weekly food market!!

Venn Street Market originally opened in November 2009 as a monthly market. In May 2010 the Street was closed and pedestrianised with a new power infrastructure built beneath. It reopened on 1st October after the works were completed and after much support from the local residents and businesses. The market is now a very successful weekly food market where all the locals are invited to do their weekly shop.

Come along and bring a friend.. Support your local market..

Allen Edwards and the wiggly worms!

At Allen Edwards, we have been meeting once a week on Mondays at after school club to work in the Secret Garden and grow an array of flowers, vegetable and herbs. Not having the best weather in the world and some pesky foxes, has meant that some things haven’t been as successful as we hoped…

We are now up to our ears with salad leaves, potatoes, onions and a few tomato plants. Lots of herbs and peas are coming along too. The children work in two’s or threes and are keen gardeners and appreciate the small insects that we look at – wiggly worms and slimey snails mostly! They are most enthusiastic about watering the garden and are very gentle towards the plants. Hurray for the Allen Edwards young gardeners!

Growing Green at Eden

The kids from Growing Green at Clapham Manor Primary have made a start on their raised beds at Eden Community Gardens, SW4.

All pupils from Clapham Manor Primary will receive a bag of organic soil and some seeds to plant over the Easter holidays. Once the plant has grown, they will replant their plant in the newly weeded raised beds at Eden! We hope all the kids will take part – if they do you can buy their seasonal fruit and vegetables at the Market in July..

Clapham Leaf Club held its second session at Larkhall Primary School looking at the guinea pig and rabbit pens enjoyed by the nursery school and its chicken pen at the primary school. All the waste is recycled – school dinners and chicken waste are both put to good use… Having been given all the groundwork in planning for this year’s harvest – now we can begin planting.. Looking forward to our next meet in March..
